Last night, Shanghai Consonancy Hospital Gynecology Director Li Jun Xia gave Xiao Li, a young woman from Sichuan, a fine new hymen. Despite the fact that the hymen repair procedure is a minor surgery, it is a very precise and delicate one. But it is also one of great results: It gave Xiao Li a hopeful new beginning. Her torturous experience merits public discussion.
On the eve of the 2006 Chinese New Year, an employee responsible for answering calls on the Hymen Hotline fielded a young woman’s desperate call. A timid voice on the line asked: “Do you perform hymen repair surgery?” Through their phone conversation, the employee learned that the woman on the phone was named Xiao Li. Six years before, Xiao Li had traveled by herself to Kunshan to work in a textile factory. The factory boss’ son often extended pretty Xiao Li a helping hand and expressed great interest in her. Naive Xiao Li was excited by the attention, but she continued to diligently work at the job she felt fortunate to have. One day, the young man invited her on a trip to the countryside. Xiao Li’s trust in the factory boss’s son cost her her chastity — only later would she discover that she was nothing but a plaything to him, a source of pleasure alone. Disgraced and with tears in her eyes, she moved to another factory.
After this painful experience, she put her work at the forefront of her life and repressed her feelings with the help of distraction from her professional success. Within three years, her efforts had taken her from the role of a minor worker to that of a textile plant manager. Yet even during this time, she was not immune to love and shared deep feelings with three different men. Because Xiao Li was an honest woman, she was upfront about her past experience with the factory boss’ son. All three men left her: They couldn’t bear that she had already been someone else’s woman.
On the eve of the Chinese New Year in 2006, a family member found a husband for her in her hometown. After all the men she had encountered in the city, Xiao Li no longer believed in true love and so agreed to the arranged marriage. On the night of their New Year’s wedding, her husband discovered that she was not a virgin. In his shock and disgust, he lambasted her for being “broken and rotten merchandise.” The newly married Xiao Li returned to her mother’s house the next day only to discover that her mother was also appalled. After enduring two weeks of hateful criticism from the people of her village, she divorced. While others were returning to their hometowns to celebrate the New Year, she returned to Kunshan by herself.
Her heart was heavy with thoughts of her painful past when she encountered online news from the Shanghai Consonancy Hospital that purported to endow women who had already been sexually active with the bodies of their younger, purer selves through a simple surgical procedure. Upon reading the news, Xiao Li couldn’t help but fantasize: If it was true, could the hymen be repaired? With this vague hope, she called the Hymen Hotline. Her story aroused the sympathy of hotline employee. In order to enable Xiao Li to leave behind her awful past and attain a new life, the employee referred her to Shanghai Consonancy Hospital for hymen repair surgery. The employee also set up pre-surgery counseling for Xiao Li, and, despite Xiao Li’s protestations that she had no economic hardships, waived half of her medical fees as a sign of goodwill from the employees of Shanghai Consonancy Hospital.
After a thousand years of feudal influence, the old way of thinking — that a virgin is a virgin only if her hymen is intact, only if the groom sees red on the wedding night — stubbornly remains in place, says Shanghai Consonancy Hospital Gynecology Director Li Jun Xia. Men still believe with these qualifications alone may her chastity and unspoiled virtue be made evidenced. This, however, is an altogether erroneous way of thinking, Li says. Many activities other than premarital sex, such as playing sports, suffering injuries, riding a bike and engaging in masturbation, rupture the hymen. This year hymen repair surgery has enjoyed a great popularity, but many of the women undergoing it have ruptured their hymens through non-sexual activities. The misunderstanding of the hymen disrupts the happiness of marriage and may even put it in crisis.
Director Li says that as social ideas change, men, regardless of whether or not they have had sexual relations with other women prior to their wedding night, require that their wives be “virgins” and use whether or not she bleeds on her wedding night as proof. Some men even use the results of this as an excuse to have adulterous affairs. This, of course, is unfair to women. Hymen repair surgery can, to a definite extent, give a woman back her confidence, re-instill in her a sense of personal respect and endow her with a brighter future.
This reporter acknowledges that even in this era old ways of thinking persist. In order to avoid painful future experiences, unmarried women should love and take care of themselves better. As medicine develops, we can only solve physical suffering, but we still have a long way to go in order to solve the psychological problems involved in this issue.
