About

Megan Shank is an editor, writer and translator living in Shanghai, China.

One of my fiction stories — one of the only ones I have on this blog as well — has been posted on Identity Theory. I’ve posted it under my “fiction writing name,” which is just my middle and last name, and also a Fitzgerald reference.

Unfortunately, Identity Theory seems to have posted a photo of what appears to be either Hong Kong or Japan to illustrate the piece — a long way from the story’s Dalian setting. I see Japanese characters in the photo (moto) and Japanese company signs, and all of the Chinese characters are traditional ones. It looks mostly like Hong Kong, however.

Traditional characters are only used in Hong Kong and Taiwan, as well as among Chinese who fled pre-Mao linguistic reform. Mainland China uses simplified characters. It’s pretty easy for even beginner learners of Chinese to confuse these things, much less those less familiar with the language. An honest mistake.
